JEE Main vs JEE Advanced: what is different and how to prepare for each
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are separate exams with different purposes. Many students prepare for both together, so it helps to know where they differ and what that means for your study.
Please check the official sources. Exam patterns, marking schemes, eligibility rules and dates change from year to year. This guide describes the general picture. For exact details, always read the current information bulletin from the National Testing Agency (JEE Main) and the current brochure published by the organising IIT (JEE Advanced), and the JoSAA website for counselling.
The short answer
| JEE Main | JEE Advanced | |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | National Testing Agency (NTA) | One of the IITs, on a rotating basis |
| Leads to | NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions, and is the route to JEE Advanced | The IITs |
| Who can take it | Students who meet the basic eligibility, such as qualifying class 12 | Only students who qualify through JEE Main, up to a cut-off that is set each year, and who meet the attempt limits |
| Style | Largely direct, applying known concepts, with a heavy emphasis on speed and accuracy over a wide syllabus | Deeper, multi-step and often less predictable, testing how well you understand concepts |
| Sessions | Offered more than once a year in recent years | Once a year |
| Counselling | Through JoSAA | Through JoSAA |
What each exam rewards
JEE Main
Breadth, speed and accuracy. You need to know the syllabus well and solve a large number of questions in limited time without avoidable errors. Silly mistakes and time management matter a lot here, because most questions are within reach of a prepared student and the margin is small.
JEE Advanced
Depth and the ability to reason through unfamiliar problems. Questions can combine ideas from different chapters, and the formats and marking schemes can differ from one year to the next, including questions with more than one correct option or partial marking. Understanding why a method works matters more than remembering it.
Preparing for both together
- Build concepts first. A strong conceptual base helps both exams. Shallow understanding may get you through some of Main and almost none of Advanced.
- Train speed separately. Main needs fast, accurate solving. Practise timed sections, not just untimed problems.
- Practise Advanced-style problems regularly. Spend time on harder, multi-concept questions even if Main is your first goal.
- Take mocks for both patterns. They test different skills, so review them differently. In a Main mock, look at time and careless errors. In an Advanced mock, look at the concepts and assumptions behind each lost question.
- Know the rules early. Check eligibility, the number of attempts allowed and important dates in the current official documents, so nothing surprises you late in the year.
Which should you focus on?
If your goal is an IIT, you need both, because Main is the gateway. If your goal is an NIT or IIIT, Main is the focus, though some students still attempt Advanced. Most students are best served by building strong concepts and then adjusting the style of practice to each exam, instead of treating them as two separate courses.
Reviewing mocks for each
Whatever the exam, the most useful habit is to find the real cause behind every lost mark and look for patterns across mocks. Our mock analysis method works for both. JEE AI Mentor is set up for JEE Main and Advanced and keeps your mock record in one place. It does not predict ranks and it can be wrong, so keep checking your work against your teachers and official sources.
Common questions
Do I need to take JEE Main to take JEE Advanced?
Yes. Eligibility for JEE Advanced comes through JEE Main, up to a cut-off set each year. Check the current brochure for the exact rules and the number of attempts allowed.
Which is harder, JEE Main or JEE Advanced?
Advanced is generally regarded as harder because it tests depth and unfamiliar problems, while Main tests speed and accuracy over the whole syllabus. Both are demanding in different ways.
Can I prepare for both at once?
Yes, and most students do. Build strong concepts, then adjust practice: timed, accurate solving for Main and harder multi-concept problems for Advanced.
See the pattern across your own mocks
JEE AI Mentor reads each mock you submit, asks what you were thinking, and keeps a record of the causes behind your mistakes so the pattern shows up over time. It is a study aid, not a promise of any rank or score.
